Province. Furthermore, the year 2022 was the first festive season without the COVID-19 restrictions, the
ECPTA officially launched the 2022 Provincial Summer Campaign on December 1, at the Wild Coast Sun
in Port Edward. The theme of this launch was “Fall in Love with the Eastern Cape” and was aimed at
promoting and driving domestic tourism during the festive season, especially to the Wild Coast Region.
In 2022/23, at the end of Quarter Three, a total of R90.385 million in revenue was generated by ECPT
against a set annual revenue target of R166.013 million mainly through the following sources of income:
Hospitality, Wild Life, Concession and Finance Income. Over the 2023 MTEF, provincial government
allocated R220.148 million for 2023/24, R229.719 million for 2024/25 and R239.965 million to finance the
operations of ECPTA.
Film Industry
The funding in recent years of the provincial film industry aims to position the EC Province, with its breath-
taking film locations, as a preferred destination for hosting local, national and international film productions.
The objective is to attain the following:
x Attract major direct film-based investments through localisation of productions on a consistent basis;
x Create permanent and temporary jobs through the productions;
x Promote the EC Province as a film and tourism destination;
x Catalyze opportunities relating to support services for SMMEs during the filming period; and
x Drive opportunities for skills enhancement for young people.
The ECDC has over the past four years invested through a localization incentive scheme, approximately
R23 million which in turn attracted about R389 million worth of investment into the Province, while employing
over 6 934 people with 572 SMMEs benefiting during the production phases of those projects. The EC
Province has through the Film Fund and other collaborative efforts, seen international productions such as
Survivor Seasons 8 & 9 and Mission Impossible featuring the mega star, Tom Cruise, and local productions
such Gqeberha: The Empire for Multi-Choice, Wild is the Wind for Netflix, and Dam for Showmax shot at
various Eastern Cape locations. The film industry is an excellent catalyst for youth employment and the
Province will continue to invest in this industry. Therefore the provincial government has made available an
additional allocation of R8 million in 2023/24 for Film Fund Production to support commercially viable
productions that may prefer to locate their projects in the Province. A further additional R10 million is
allocated in 2023/24 to support the establishment of a film studio in the Province aimed at reducing the cost
of filming. The studio is envisioned to capacitate equipment hiring companies, avail post-production facilities
and other related film services.
