5. Main services
In line with its mandate, the main services rendered are as follows:
• Combat poaching, illegal use of natural resources and trade in endangered species.
• Provide scientific and technical advice to promote biodiversity conservation best practice as well
as effective and appropriate planning and policy development.
• Create employment opportunities through Green Job projects, various Expanded Public Works
Programmes (EPWP) and seasonal harvesting of natural resources.
• Create economic opportunities by creating a demand for goods and services and unlocking
opportunities for economic development for entrepreneurs, concessionaires, eco-tourism, and
cultural tourism linkages.
• Promote the utilisation of natural endowments on provincial reserves for appropriate activities
that generate revenue.
• Develop economic infrastructure relating to tourism, reserves operations and public servitudes.
• Provision of ecological goods and services, for example clean water through catchments
management, combating soil erosion and carbon sequestration.
• Facilitate access to natural resources within designated reserves, for example grazing, thatching
grass, fish, venison, and firewood.
• Support human capital development initiatives to ensure optimal socio-economic impact on
communities.
• Strengthen the capacity of communities to effectively participate in biodiversity conservation and
co-management of Provincial Parks.
• To champion tourism development to position EC as a globally competitive destination.
• To facilitate preparation of tourism experiences to be market ready by following a well
communicated progressive path.
• To increase length of stay of visitors to the province by marketing packages, experiences and
routes for visitors to explore.
• To spread experiences geographically across the province.
• To facilitate coastal belt tourism in line with the Oceans’ Economy.
• Increase the number of job opportunities associated with tourism.
• Improve visitor service and satisfaction.
